Here's a list of some alternative "veggie curse words" that I've heard over the years as a life long SDA... Although these words are usually still deemed inappropriate by older Adventists (and I imagine this goes for other denominations as well), you can usually get away with using these words without too much hassle -- at least in an outside-of-church environment:

Fudge or Freak = F--K
Darn or Drat = D-MN
Crap, Shoot or Ship = S--T
Wuss/Wussy = P---Y
Prick = D--K
Heck = H-LL
"B" or Witch = B--CH
Butt = A--
Gah = God
Dagnabit or Doggonit = G--D---IT
Geezz = Jesus
Cheese and Rice = Jesus Christ

Yes, I agree with you. If you are thinking the word(s), you might as well go ahead and say it! If the principal is showing good character and restraint, then substituting a "veggie curse word" for the real thing seams pretty silly.

As your mom pointed out, by using certain "strong language" you WILL offend and turn-off a portion of your reading audience... However, this is your own blog and account of this journey, and if you're not worried about loosing those more sensitive readers/viewers/future customers, then no effing problem! (no disrespect to your mom). Personally, your little rants and outbursts make me laugh. :)

I do recommend getting some insect repellant! Not only does it keep the bugs away but also doubles as a flame thrower/fire starter!

I enjoy reading the posts!
Say hi to Phillip for me.

Ryan,

I fell asleep in my coffee over the first part. Give me the meat first (ie...like you getting ate by mosquitoes hahahaha) and the acting/religious shit later.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.
The point is are you writing this for yourself or for your readers, or perhaps both?

The general population is not as esoteric as you are, Ryan. The majority of us have had no method acting.
I am going to speak for the readers I know: we love your exhuberance! We love your adventure and your solutions! We love your stories and your poetic descriptions of your journey. We love hearing about the people that you meet, and everything you see and do. We love your humor and your logic. We are hopeful! We support you! We are with you!

And then when you use language and phrases that seem to come out of an angry (at the whole world) man we lose faith and interest.

It is that simple.

Language is used to communicate no? For Seventh-day-Adventists, Baptists, Buddists, Jews and Muslims - language is used to communicate! Adults, children, straights, gays, republicans, democrats, artistocrats and bums - all communicate through language.

You are the writer. It is your choice to lift us all up with your words and your journey, or bring us down with the flick of your keyboard. When you use angry, violent and beligerent language it makes us feel as though we have been duped! That our trust in what you have to say has been misplaced. That you seduce us with your beautiful words and exciting stories, then we feel smaacked in the face with your angry and scary lamentation.

And I say to myself: What a DipShit!!! (Phillip's upbringing using the word dip for shit + Ryan's upbringing using the word shit for shit = the word, get it?)

This isn't a novel this is an current account of your journey down "The River of Life". This is different. Readers come in all ages and backgrounds to your blog. This isn't you writing to you. You have made yourself responsible to us (your readers) by the very nature of your blog. Show some responsibility.

I suggest you write the novel simultaneously as you write your blog postings so you can practice your method writing in that format.

love you, Ryan,
Mom

hey ryan (and philip, by extension)
have you read Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates by Tom Robbins.

It has some interesting things to say about religion/spirituality and laughter which I think relate quite nicely to your little diatribe at the beginning of this post
